Ian Smith

Ian Smith is Manager of the Global TB Drug Facility (GDF), a new initiative launched in 2001 by the Global Partnership to Stop TB to increase access to high quality TB drugs. Prior to this, Dr. Smith worked with the Stop TB partnership, and in collaboration with Partners in Health, jointly coordinated the development of the Global Plan to Stop TB. Dr. Smith has also worked in Nepal, both as a missionary doctor in a rural hospital, and as director of a community health and development programme in the western hills of Gorkha district. Dr. Smith also worked with Nepal's National TB Programme to introduce and expand the DOTS strategy. Under this program, Nepal has made remarkable progress with DOTS, and reached the global targets for TB control in 2002.
