Walter Reid

Walter Reid is the Director of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment and is based at the World Fish Center (ICLARM) in Penang. Since 1998, Dr. Reid has led a process to establish the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, which will be a four-year process designed to improve the management of the world's natural and managed ecosystems by helping to meet the needs of decision-makers and the public for peer-reviewed, policy-relevant scientific information on the condition of ecosystems, consequences of ecosystem change, and options for response. Dr. Reid has conducted scientific and policy research in the fields of biodiversity conservation, climate change, energy policy, sustainable agriculture, and biotechnology. Dr. Reid earned a PhD in zoology with specialisation in population and community ecology from the University of Washington.

As of Jan 1, 2007, the advisory work formerly carried out by the Millennium Project secretariat team is being continued by an MDG Support team integrated under the United Nations Development Program.
